Night of Champions: The History
One night in November 2001 would forever change the future of the NPWA. This was the original Night of Champions and it was a showcase of the best the NPWA had to offer and established the start of a great tradition.
The show would open with a classic Triangle Elimination Match for the Light-Heavyweight Championship that saw Fahrenheit overcome Dangerous Damon Leigh and Steve Star to take the win in the first of 5 championship bouts. The vile Chaos was successful in a Hardcore Championship defence, Venom wowed fans with his unique offence but was cost a win by the interference of Brickwall. A random draw would produce our first ever Tag Team Championship contest, in which Sean Phoenix and the Welsh Dragon upset the very popular team of Jason Glory and Shaun Williams. The most memorable contest of the night was the technical battle between Richard Noble and Paul “Flash” Andrews for the International Championship. Andrew’s celebration was cut short was Brickwall arrived once again to serve up some pain, but fans were pleasantly surprised when Doctor Dream arrived and smashed the big man in the head with the NPWA Title. The 2nd half of the double main event began right away and dream was able to take a fall over the monster straight away to the delight of everyone.
When the 2nd Night of Champions was announced for the 10th October 2003 anticipation was high. The Light-Heavyweights once again started things off with a Triangle Elimination Match, some dodgy officiating by Commissioner Marsden allowed a young Adrian Myers to upset Danny Hope and then Champion The Fireball to take the gold. Brickwall, Ryan Maiden and D-Dogg fought a hardcore war and 4Bidden Fusion made an impact by taking the Tag Team Titles. The Main Event was huge, one of the biggest in NPWA History, as both the International and NPWA Championships were on the line in a two falls triple threat match. Both of the titles changed hands as Slayer walked out with the International gold and Paul Andrews lifted the top title, both pinning Doctor Dream in the process.
Night of Champions 3 was held on August 6th 2004 and was the 1st time that the best of British from outside of the NPWA were invited to compete. Andy Hogg made his NPWA debut in a match with the UK Goldust in one of two main events. Mr Marsden and Adrian Myers shockingly returned after a 10 month absence, but The Fireball overcame Myers in an International Championship match. The Tag Team and Interfederational Championships would also be successfully defended in big grudge matches. The biggest match of the night saw Paul Andrews and Ryan Maiden battle it out in a three stages of hell match for the NPWA Heavyweight Championship and Maiden walked out as new Champion amidst some controversy.
Night of Champions 4 (12/08/05) saw the event arrive at Mr Earl’s for the first time. We saw a reshuffle in the Governing Body as Ice was fired but Joey Ace was brought on board. In a first time ever battle of two of Britain’s top sports-entertainers Andy Hogg pinned Dirk Feelgood. The Hardcore Championship changed hands unexpectedly as Chris Sabre assisted Lumberjack to victory over Jason Glory. The lifelong feud between Gary Wild and Slayer continued as they fought once again. The show stealer of the night was once again and International Championship match as Paul “Flash” Andrews bested his friend and former trainee D-Dogg in a technically solid contest. And in the main event Brickwall showcased his dominance as he powered his way through both Joey Ace and Phobia to keep the Championship away from the Governing Body.
Night of Champions 5 (29/06/06) had just 2 title bouts, but these were over shadowed by the two big tag team grudge matches on the card that night. The show opened with some Light-Heavyweight action for the Triple T Championship. Adrian Myers came close to regaining the title, but Kevin Omega got himself disqualified when a huge man that we would later know as Oblivion came to his aid. Heaven and Hell paid off a referee to ensure that they took the Tag Team Championships from the Untouchables. NPWA Champion Gary Wild led Enigma and Brickwall into battle against the team of International Champion AC Kage, Bodycount and Slayer and came up with a big victory. The main event will go down as one of the biggest matches in NPWA history, the feud between Paul “Flash” Andrews and the Governing Body dragged in two of the greatest wrestlers produced in Britain. So we had The Fireball and Jonny Storm Vs Jody Fleisch and Paul Andrews. Fleisch would pin Fireball for the win after a great match, but Fireball would blame Storm, sparking off a feud that is still going today.
So, that brings us to July 27th 2007 and Night of Champions 6. A night yet to be added to the history books but also one of the most highly anticipated nights in memory. A night where the very best of the NPWA will stand side by side and face to face with the best wrestlers in Britain today. 7 Matches, 6 guests, 5 Championship bouts, 4 corner posts, 3 ring ropes, 2 ticket prices and just one night to fit it all in. This is Night of Champions 6, bigger and better than all those that have come before it, make sure you are there and live a piece of history.
